What is real today? Chances to establish a social network in real life?

Posted on March 10, 2008.

Since a few weeks I am now pondering on how to introduce a mobile social network. The issue I got stuck with few days ago was, that in that place I want to establish that real life social network people usually don’t talk to each other.

I don’t see any better place to network but exactly this one, at least not any place which is not yet developed as a networking place, therefore I initially thought, it might be a great chance to develop a social network there, utilizing a social web platform.

However, I came to the situation I wondered how to perform the first step, how to get it launched all. What I realized, then, was that I have that image in mind, people might not want to break the silence there. On the other hand, what I realized then was, that the image might be in my mind only, or at least in my mind, and in theirs, but possibly that image might be wrong, as well for me as for them. So, the point to tackle is how to get over this probably outdated image. And, how to get over this point for myself and how to make them, the society I am about to launch that social network in, to realize they might have an outdated image in mind.

So, the question is how to ask them/get them asked whether or not they feel being modern. — I presume most of them use Google, so some cutting edge (i.e. web) tool’s influencing their lives already, so they can’t be really unmodern. Which might hint them — or at least me — that they are not that that old-fashioned their behaviour at that place suggests.

This way, I might be able to get over this obstacle — to break what I feel is reality and norm or taboo. And just now, thanks to Tom Raftery, I begun to watch a new version of Hans Rosling’s talk on statistics of world health [de]. By the way, the guy presents hilariously! At about minute 6:50, out of the mouth of Hans Rosling, I learn one important message: Your image of what is the world like is 1950. It’s totally outdated. — I take this as an affirmation for going after to determine whether my image of how to behave on the meant place — and to break, overcome it if possible.

The place I am talking about is the routes commuters take every single day. Groups of them start at similar places, stop at similar locations, they move there, these routes all along, almost every single day. They attend each other for a given time every day. What better chance to network? All necessary to do is to break the silence, isolation. That you might be not allowed to do so might be outdated, I assume. What’s your opinion on this?
