some probably useful links to get into Ruby on Rails
As I am going to use this blog here as a sync’ed resource for stuff I might need at work and at home, I’m going to dump some Ruby/Rails links in here, taken from my local Wiki:
Update: I foster a separate page of useful links for getting into RoR.
- a Slideshare presentation on Rails
- official notes on the release of Rails 2.0
- What’s new in Rails 2.0
- a practical introduction into Rails 2.0, including a mini-HOWTO to get Rails 2.0 onto a Debian Etch
- tutorial on connecting a database and a model
- tutorial on Migrations
- tutorial for rails older than 2.0
- documentation/book(s) on the RubyGem Tool
Some tools for using Rails:
- ease creating rails views
- ease dealing with CSS
- Sake: rails x subversion
- a tool I got suggested for several times now, already: Piston (
but still not figured out what it is really forI didn’t figure it out by myself, but Piston’s author, François Beausoleil, helped me out: Piston is a tool “to manage dependencies, and upgrade them at a time of your choosing.” Thanks, François!) - rails x apache
Getting Help:
Rails on Debian Etch:
- Debian folks on the issue
- install Rails 2.0 on a Debian Etch (followed by a basic introduction into using Rails 2.0)
Rails for PHP folks:
- evolving from PHP to rails
- Amy Hoy’s famous blog, also mentioning her shift from PHP to rails

Hi, I’m François, the author of Piston. You use Piston to manage dependencies, and upgrade them at a time of your choosing. I’d recommend you head on over to the website, but you linked to it already
